Our Origin
The Village
At the heart of LAKIDOR lies the weaving community of Sohkhar Village in the hills of Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya—a land known for its lush greenery, deep-rooted culture, and centuries-old handloom traditions. Sohkhar is home to around 65 households, and together with other villages under Raid Nongtluh—a traditional cluster of 32 villages under a local syiemship—these communities continue to preserve the complete eri silk ecosystem of rearing, dyeing, spinning, and weaving.
The Craft
Here, eri silk is not just a craft but a way of life. From sericulture to finished textiles, every stage is carried out within the community, where knowledge has been passed down through generations. The artisans of Raid Nongtluh are skilled in transforming natural eri cocoons into fine yarn, which is then hand-dyed using traditional methods and woven into durable, breathable fabrics. This living heritage connects multiple villages through shared skill, culture, and identity, making Ri-Bhoi a true center of sustainable handloom practice.
The Weavers
Our weavers are the soul of LAKIDOR. Most are women and young artisans from these rural households, who find both livelihood and dignity through their craft. Each hand-spun thread and handwoven fabric represents hours of patience, precision, and inherited knowledge. Working with eri silk—also known as Ahimsa silk—the silkworm is allowed to complete its natural life cycle unharmed, reflecting a deep respect for life and harmony with nature.
The Heritage
Eri silk has been part of Meghalaya's heritage for centuries. Traditionally, it emerged as a self-sustaining rural practice where families reared silkworms, fed them local leaves such as rynda, phandieng, pajam, and kynshor, and used the resulting fiber for warmth and daily clothing. Over time, this humble practice evolved into one of the region's most valued cultural and economic traditions, recognized for its sustainability, comfort, and ethical foundation.
Our Commitment
Through LAKIDOR, this rich heritage is carried forward into contemporary, globally relevant products while preserving its authenticity. Every shawl, muffler, stole, and textile accessory embodies the story of Sohkhar, the wider Raid Nongtluh villages, and the philosophy of Ahimsa. Each piece is not just a product but a reflection of collective skill, community effort, and cultural continuity.
At LAKIDOR, we remain committed to transparency, empowerment, and sustainability. By supporting our work, customers directly contribute to the livelihoods of weaving households across Raid Nongtluh and help preserve a living tradition that binds nature, craft, and community together in every thread.
